Apple is set to introduce a new hearing aid mode for the AirPods Pro with the upcoming iOS 18 update, instead of launching a new version of the AirPods Pro in 2024, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. This new feature enhances the AirPods Pro's capabilities in assisting with hearing, building upon previous functionalities such as the Live Listen feature introduced in the iOS 12 update. Live Listen transforms the iPhone into a directional microphone, relaying sounds directly to the AirPods in real time. Additionally, in 2021, the Conversation Boost feature was introduced for the AirPods Pro, designed to amplify voices directly in front of the user, proving helpful in situations where hearing conversations clearly might be challenging.

Interestingly, these features of the AirPods Pro, although not originally intended as substitutes for more expensive hearing aids, have shown commendable performance. The accessibility to such technologies is increasing, especially with the FDA's new guidelines allowing certain hearing devices to be sold over the counter without a medical exam or consultation with an audiologist. While details on this new hearing aid mode remain under wraps, Gurman's previous reports indicate Apple's commitment to enhancing the hearing health features of the AirPods lineup.
